India's Cricket Champions Land £12.2m Bonus After T20 World Cup Victory
India's Cricket Team Gets £12.2m Bonus After T20 Win

The triumphant Indian cricket team has been awarded an extraordinary financial reward following their latest T20 World Cup success, with the nation's cricket board granting a staggering bonus of 1.31 billion rupees, equivalent to approximately £12.2 million. This sum dramatically overshadows the prize money earned for securing the championship itself.

Historic Third Title Secured in Dominant Fashion

India clinched their historic third men's T20 World Cup title with a commanding 96-run victory over New Zealand in a one-sided final held in Ahmedabad on Sunday. For this tournament win, the team earned $2.34 million, roughly £1.8 million, in prize money. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India, widely recognised as the wealthiest cricket board globally, has now announced this additional, substantial reward for the squad.

A Bonus Exceeding the Tournament's Total Prize Pot

Remarkably, the bonus awarded to the Indian team is approximately $3 million higher than the entire tournament's overall prize pot, which stood at $11.25 million, or about £8.8 million. In an official statement, the BCCI expressed its congratulations, saying, "The Board congratulates the players, support staff and selectors once again on this historic achievement and wishes them continued success in the future."

This is not the first time the BCCI has generously rewarded its players. Last year, following India's Champions Trophy victory, the team received a cash bonus of $6.72 million, which was three times the $2.24 million prize money they earned for that title.

Setting Sights on Olympic Glory in Los Angeles

With India now established as three-time T20 World Cup champions, captain Suryakumar Yadav has already outlined the team's next major objective: securing a gold medal at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. Cricket is set to make a highly anticipated return to the Olympic Games in two years' time, and India are poised to enter as favourites due to their exceptional recent form in white-ball cricket.

A Formidable Track Record in White-Ball Competitions

The Indian team has demonstrated remarkable consistency and dominance, having won the last two T20 World Cups, alongside triumphs in last year's Champions Trophy and the Asia Cup. This impressive streak positions them as a formidable force heading into future international competitions.

Looking ahead, India will have the opportunity to complete their collection of white-ball trophies at the 50-over World Cup next year, scheduled to be hosted across South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. The combination of substantial financial rewards and ambitious sporting targets underscores India's growing stature and ambition in the global cricket arena.
