Henderson's Direct Approach for Cheltenham Gold Cup Contender
In a significant strategic decision ahead of the prestigious National Hunt Festival, trainer Nicky Henderson has confirmed that stable star Jango Baie will head straight to the Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup without a preparatory run. The Lambourn-based handler has opted against entering the seven-year-old in Saturday's William Hill Denman Chase, choosing instead to focus all efforts on the blue riband event in March.
Gold Cup Ambitions and Ground Considerations
Currently priced as the 5-1 second favourite for the Gold Cup following his respectable fourth-place finish in the King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day, Jango Baie has been working impressively at Henderson's Seven Barrows yard. "He goes straight there," Henderson stated emphatically. "We've made that decision, I've spoken to owner Tony Barney and he's more than happy. He's in great form. We always go to Kempton the fortnight before and I'm pretty sure he'll be on that bus."
Meanwhile, Henderson faces a more immediate decision regarding another Festival hopeful. Lulamba, the current 6-4 favourite for the Arkle Challenge Trophy, is under consideration for Saturday's William Hill Game Spirit Chase at Newbury. However, the trainer indicated he is closely monitoring ground conditions before committing. "The intention is to run Lulamba but I'm tossing the balls in the air every five minutes," Henderson admitted. "He's only had two runs over fences and in one of them he only jumped five fences. It didn't tell us a lot, but then he wins a Grade 1 very impressively and jumps beautifully."
Murphy Secures Constitution Hill Ride for Flat Debut
In another notable development, Henderson confirmed that champion jockey Oisin Murphy will partner the exceptional Constitution Hill when the 2023 Champion Hurdler makes his eagerly anticipated debut on the Flat. The historic transition will occur at Southwell on February 20th, marking a fascinating new chapter for the superstar hurdler.
"We had a little practice in the stalls and then he had a gallop over nine furlongs this morning with two pretty high-class companions," Henderson revealed. "Oisin was happy, I was happy and we're on schedule for Southwell in a fortnight and two days' time. He's in great form." This collaboration between jump racing's premier trainer and Flat racing's champion jockey adds considerable intrigue to Constitution Hill's unconventional campaign.
Henderson's dual announcements highlight a period of careful planning and bold decision-making as the Cheltenham Festival approaches. The direct route to the Gold Cup for Jango Baie represents a calculated gamble, while the handling of Lulamba demonstrates the nuanced attention to detail required in top-level National Hunt training. The Constitution Hill development, meanwhile, promises to be one of the most fascinating narratives of the early Flat season.
