Sabrina Wittmann Secures New Contract with FC Ingolstadt
Sabrina Wittmann has officially signed a contract extension to remain as the head coach of FC Ingolstadt, reinforcing her pioneering position in German football. This decision comes after her historic appointment in summer 2024 as the first woman to lead a professional men's team in Germany, a move that has garnered significant attention beyond the club's third-tier status.
A Coach First, a Woman Second
Wittmann, aged 34, recently obtained her coaching pro licence, underscoring her qualifications and dedication to the sport. In a recent interview, she expressed pride in being a trailblazer but stressed her desire to be recognized primarily for her coaching abilities. "I'll always be the first woman in Germany coaching a professional men's team," Wittmann stated, "but I want to be seen as a coach. It's about how you want to be seen, not just about being the first." She aims to focus on being a good manager and human being towards her players, rather than solely on her gender.
Ingolstadt's Commitment to Wittmann
The club's management has shown strong support for Wittmann, with managing director Dieter Beiersdorfer highlighting her deep connection to FC Ingolstadt. Having been involved with the club for nearly two decades, Wittmann's experience includes roles in the academy and under-19s before taking over the first team. Her appointment is viewed as an endorsement of her skills, not merely a symbolic gesture, with the club valuing her long-term identification and responsibility.
Personal Journey and Adaptation
Born in Ingolstadt in 1991, Wittmann's football journey began locally after encouragement from Miroslav Klose. She later played high school soccer in the United States and coached middle school teams before returning to Germany. Since becoming head coach, she has navigated increased media scrutiny, initially feeling pressure but now embracing more football-focused discussions. "I get asked a lot more questions about football now than I did at the beginning," she noted, "and that's something I love."
Building a Sustainable Future
Wittmann faces the challenge of revitalizing FC Ingolstadt, which was in the Bundesliga less than a decade ago under Ralph Hasenhüttl. She emphasizes creating a unique and sustainable approach rather than copying past successes. Her authenticity, shaped by diverse experiences including an apprenticeship at Audi and law studies, is key to her coaching philosophy. Despite facing negative feedback on social media and in stadiums, she remains focused on positive interactions and her long-term ambitions.
Ambition and Patience
While committed to Ingolstadt, Wittmann is ambitious and admires coaches like Julian Nagelsmann for their perseverance. She reflects on her own 15-year path to a professional coaching role, advocating for authenticity and patience. This patient approach aligns with Ingolstadt's vision, making their partnership a promising match for future success in German football.
