Tu lost his mother to cancer when he was just twelve years old, a devastating blow that shaped his early life. 'I was a mummy's boy. I always followed her around. Wherever she went, I went,' the Dragons winger told News Corp. 'When she was gone, it was tough. I couldn't sleep without her.' He revealed that it took approximately eight months to adjust to sleeping alone, as he endured nightmares during this difficult period.
Born and raised in the small Samoan village of Saleimoa, Tu maintains strong ties to his community. Following his mother's passing, he was cared for by numerous local elders. 'I spent time at four families and their houses,' he explained. 'Everyone put their hand up to be around us.' This communal support played a crucial role in his upbringing.
Confronting a Terrifying Sport Ban and Anxiety
In a surprising twist, Tu was banned from all contact sport by his mother at the age of eight after a frightening incident during a rugby match where he 'almost died.' This experience left him with severe anxiety when playing football, causing him to shake uncontrollably and suffer panic attacks. 'I'd freak out,' Tu admitted. 'I would just start shaking. I remember this one time I was playing footy and I woke up in the middle of the house and they said I almost died. I started shaking after taking a carry.'
Despite this early trauma, Tu eventually returned to contact sport, using it as a therapeutic outlet to escape his troubles. His perseverance in the face of such challenges highlights his resilience and determination.
A Near Miss and Ultimate Redemption
The 26-year-old winger also faced a heartbreaking near miss in his career. He was poised to make his NRL debut for the New Zealand Warriors in 2024, but this opportunity vanished after he sustained a knee injury. Tu had previously played for the Warriors at the NSW Cup level, showcasing his talent and potential.
