Volkanovski Equals Aldo's Record with Dominant Title Defence in Sydney
Volkanovski Matches Aldo's Record with Sydney Win

UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski has further cemented his legacy in mixed martial arts with a commanding and historic points victory over Brazilian challenger Diego Lopes. The triumph, secured in front of a home crowd in Sydney, saw the 37-year-old New South Wales star equal the legendary Jose Aldo's record of eight featherweight title wins, marking a significant milestone in an already illustrious career.

Judges' Scores Reflect Volkanovski's Dominance

Two judges scored Sunday's highly anticipated bout at the Qudos Bank Arena 49-46 in favour of Volkanovski, with the third judge awarding him a decisive 50-45 victory. This outcome underscored the champion's tactical superiority and control throughout the five-round contest, which served as the first defence of his second reign as champion. Volkanovski initially claimed the vacant title against Lopes back in April of last year, setting the stage for this rematch.

Strategic Mastery and Technical Precision

Demonstrating immense respect for his opponent's formidable power, Volkanovski showcased his renowned fighting intelligence and strategic acumen. He utilised exceptional movement and footwork to evade Lopes' aggressive strikes, rarely allowing the hard-hitting Brazilian to land significant blows. Volkanovski consistently found his mark with sharp right-hand punches to the head, while his left jab also proved highly effective, frequently connecting with precision.

This bout marked Volkanovski's first fight in Sydney in over eight years, adding an emotional layer to his performance. Although Lopes successfully defended against several takedown attempts during the initial four rounds, Volkanovski managed to secure a crucial takedown in the fifth and final round, further asserting his dominance and sealing the victory.

Volkanovski's Post-Fight Reflections

In his post-fight comments, Volkanovski acknowledged the challenges posed by his opponent's strength and resilience. 'I wanted to take him down and grab hold of him and put him down but he's strong,' he admitted. 'I didn't want to stand for 25 minutes, I'll be honest, but we got the job done.'

He also praised the adjustments made by both teams, highlighting the strategic evolution from their previous encounter. 'We were ready for him to make the right adjustments; his team did a good job,' Volkanovski added. 'Obviously, we learnt from the last fight, we moved to the right and did a great job of cutting that off straight away, but that just means I can use all my other tools. I made the adjustments, that's what makes a true champion.'

Co-Main Event and Australian Fighters' Results

In the co-main event, which featured a clash between ranked lightweights, France's No.8 Benoit Saint Denis secured a second-round technical knockout victory over New Zealand's No.6 Dan Hooker. This result added to the evening's excitement and showcased the global talent within the UFC roster.

Of the eleven Australian fighters in action on the card, seven emerged victorious, reflecting a strong showing for the home nation. Perth's Quillan Salkilld delivered an impressive performance, securing his fourth UFC win within twelve months via a first-round submission of his more experienced compatriot, Jamie Mullarkey. Following his victory, Salkilld called for a matchup against a ranked opponent, signalling his ambition to climb the competitive ladder.

However, the event also saw disappointment for popular Sydney heavyweight Tai Tuivasa, who suffered his sixth consecutive loss, highlighting the unpredictable and demanding nature of professional mixed martial arts.
