Hull Kingston Rovers have officially announced that their head coach, Willie Peters, will depart the club at the conclusion of the current season. The Australian coach, who has been at the helm for four years, is set to return to the southern hemisphere to pursue a new opportunity in the National Rugby League (NRL).
A Historic Tenure Comes to a Close
Willie Peters, aged 47, has overseen one of the most successful periods in Hull KR's history. Last year, he guided the team to a remarkable domestic treble, securing multiple trophies in a single season. This achievement was further bolstered in February when Hull KR claimed the World Club Challenge title with a victory over Brisbane, marking a historic quadruple for the club under his leadership.
Moving to the NRL with PNG Chiefs
Peters is understood to be heading to the NRL, where he will take charge of the new franchise, the PNG Chiefs. This team is scheduled to join the prestigious Australian league in 2028, representing a significant step in Peters' coaching career. His move underscores the growing appeal of NRL roles for top coaches from around the world.
In a statement, Peters expressed mixed emotions about his decision. "I've made no secret of my desire to coach in the NRL as the next step of my career. However, it makes this decision no less difficult," he said. He extended his gratitude to the board, players, and staff at Sewell Group Craven Park for their unwavering support during his tenure, highlighting how he has grown both professionally and personally.
Peters also paid tribute to the fans, calling them "the best fans in the world" and noting that Hull KR and the East Hull community will always hold a special place in his heart. He emphasized his ongoing commitment to the team, stating, "The job is not done, I am fully committed to what's ahead, which continues this week in preparing the players for the Hull derby this Friday. Our goal is always to make our community proud and we aim to do that each and every week."
Club's Response and Current Season
Owner Neil Hudgell praised Peters for his contributions, describing him as "the coach of the world club champions" and affirming that he deserves to leave on his own terms. Hudgell added, "Willie Peters led us to the most successful season in the history of Hull rugby league in 2025. For now, and for the rest of this year, he will continue to drive a culture that demands success."
Despite the triumph in the World Club Challenge, Hull KR has faced challenges at the start of this season. However, they showcased a return to form with a dominant 52-10 victory over St Helens on Friday, signaling a positive turn as they navigate the remainder of the campaign under Peters' guidance.
As the season progresses, all eyes will be on how Peters and Hull KR perform in their final matches together, with fans and the rugby league community keen to see if they can add more silverware before his departure.
