Wrexham Mock Southampton Over Spygate in Fixture Post

Wrexham have become the latest Championship club to poke fun at Southampton over the infamous 'Spygate' scandal that unfolded last season. The Saints were thrown out of the play-offs, having made it to the final against Hull City, after they were found guilty of covertly gaining insider information on Middlesbrough and other opponents throughout the season.

Social Media Dig

The Welsh outfit didn't miss their chance to get involved in the ribbing on social media following confirmation of the fixtures for the 2026/27 Championship campaign. Wrexham are scheduled to play the South Coast outfit on September 19 and their social media team made a cheeky reference to their opponents' misconduct.

Wrexham's official Instagram account posted to its 1.5 million followers. Accompanying the mocked-up calendar image was the caption that read: "Taking us into the international break," with an emoji of a spy holding a magnifying glass.

Eagle-eyed fans would have also noticed that Southampton's emblem had been edited to include a caricature of a man behind a tree. The reference for this was a leaked image of their intern William Salt stood watching a training session from behind a tree, which later spread around social media at the time of the scandal.

Wrexham fans joined the club in mocking their rivals with crying-laughing emojis littered around the comments section. Southampton are yet to publicly respond to the post, which gained over 1,000 likes in the first hour of publishing.
