Carlos Alcaraz produced a stunning performance to defeat Jannik Sinner 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the US Open final, reclaiming the world No 1 ranking. The 22-year-old Spaniard outplayed the defending champion and top seed, showcasing his complete game with devastating forehands, precise serving, and clever variation.
Alcaraz, who now leads Sinner 10-5 in their head-to-head record, becomes the second-youngest man in the Open era to win six grand slam titles, trailing only Björn Borg. He is also the fourth man to win multiple majors on all three surfaces.
The match was the first time two men have faced each other in three grand slam finals in the same calendar year in the Open era, with Alcaraz finishing the trilogy 2-1 up. He has now won seven of their last eight meetings.
However, the occasion was overshadowed by the presence of US President Donald Trump, who attended the final. Security measures caused long queues and a delayed start, with many fans still waiting to enter during the second set. Trump was shown on the big screen at the end of the first set, drawing boos from the crowd.
On court, Alcaraz was dominant from the start, breaking Sinner early and taking the first set with just two unforced errors. Sinner fought back to level the match, but Alcaraz regained control, breaking early in the third and fourth sets to seal the victory in just over three hours.
