Carlos Alcaraz Eager for Demanding Clay Court Season Ahead of French Open Defence
Alcaraz Ready for Demanding Clay Season Before French Open

World number one Carlos Alcaraz has declared himself prepared and enthusiastic for the return of the clay court season, describing it as a "very demanding" period both physically and mentally. The Spanish tennis star is targeting a complete schedule of tournaments to build crucial momentum before he defends his French Open title at Roland Garros later this year.

Alcaraz Embraces Clay Return in Monaco

Speaking to reporters in Monaco on Sunday, where he is competing this week, Alcaraz expressed his eagerness to return to his preferred surface. "This is probably one of the best times of the season for me," Alcaraz stated. "I miss clay every time the clay season is over. It's been a long time since Roland Garros that I haven't touched clay. In my first practices, I said to my team that it's time to get the socks dirty again. It feels amazing to be back on clay."

Full Tournament Schedule Planned

The 22-year-old champion outlined his ambitious plans for the coming weeks, aiming to compete in Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Madrid, and Rome before the French Open main draw begins on May 24. Alcaraz acknowledged the challenges of this packed schedule, noting, "It's very demanding physically and mentally. The week in Barcelona is perhaps when I should rest, but Barcelona is a very important tournament for me."

Alcaraz emphasized his commitment to managing his physical condition throughout this demanding period. "My plan is to take care of my body as much as possible during matches and tournaments," he explained, reflecting on his injury absence from last year's Madrid Open.

Building on Previous Clay Success

The seven-time Grand Slam champion enters this clay season with significant momentum from his 2025 triumphs. Alcaraz captured his fifth Grand Slam title by defeating rival Jannik Sinner in an epic Roland Garros final last June, adding to clay court victories in Monte Carlo and Rome, plus a runner-up finish in Barcelona.

Alcaraz highlighted how his Monte Carlo victory last season proved transformative. "After the feeling that I got here, I just got better and better," he recalled. "I understood and I realised how I should play after this week. That's why I did an exceptional year."

Competitive Landscape and Opening Match

Alcaraz will begin his Monte Carlo campaign in the second round against either Stan Wawrinka or Sebastian Baez. The tennis world anticipates that his primary competition will come from long-term rival Jannik Sinner, who has demonstrated formidable form with recent victories in both Indian Wells and the Miami Open, completing the prestigious "Sunshine Double."

As the clay court season unfolds, all eyes will be on Alcaraz as he navigates this demanding schedule while preparing to defend his French Open crown, setting the stage for another compelling chapter in his already illustrious career.
