Jamie Carragher has suggested that Newcastle United could sell either Bruno Guimaraes or Sandro Tonali, depending on which player commands the highest transfer fee. The former Liverpool defender’s comments come as both midfielders are linked with moves away from St James’ Park this summer.
Anthony Gordon already departed
Newcastle have already lost winger Anthony Gordon, who joined Barcelona earlier in the transfer window. Carragher described the situation as the team “breaking up,” noting that further departures could be damaging. Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: “Not a great season for them last season, but it just almost feels like that team is sort of breaking up now. Anthony Gordon has gone, Tonali is looking like he may move on. I think there's been a bid for Arsenal as well today for Bruno Guimaraes.”
Interest from top clubs
Tonali was linked with a January exit and has already rejected an offer from Tottenham. Arsenal and Manchester City are also monitoring the Italian, who has been considered the most likely midfielder to leave. Meanwhile, Guimaraes, Newcastle’s captain, has attracted interest from Arsenal, who have reportedly evaluated a potential move. Both players are valued at approximately £100 million.
Carragher’s verdict on potential exits
Carragher acknowledged Guimaraes’ quality, noting his role as a central midfielder for Brazil in the World Cup. However, he warned that losing both players would be too much for Newcastle. “I think Guimaraes and Tonali both leave a huge hole for Newcastle to fill. So, I think they probably lose one of them, and it would probably come down to who is getting offered the most money for,” he said.
Ownership concerns
Newcastle’s Saudi Arabian owners made an impressive start after taking over, but questions have arisen over their long-term commitment to the project in the North East. The club faces a challenging summer as they try to retain key talent while managing financial constraints.
