Norwich City forward Josh Sargent has reportedly concluded that his time at the club is over, following a contentious meeting with senior figures that left him feeling deeply disrespected. The 25-year-old USA international is now pushing for a move to Major League Soccer side Toronto FC, driven by a desire to be closer to his young family in North America.
A Heated Discussion Leads to a Breakdown
Last week, Sargent held what was intended to be a clear-the-air discussion with head coach Philippe Clement and sporting director Ben Knapper. The purpose was to explain his wish to depart after Toronto submitted a formal bid for his services. However, the talks took a sour turn, becoming heated and confrontational.
During the exchange, Knapper is understood to have made a remark concerning Sargent's family that the striker found profoundly disrespectful and upsetting. This incident has solidified Sargent's resolve to leave Carrow Road, with his primary motivation being the wellbeing of his wife and three young children, whom he wishes to raise back in the United States.
Disciplinary Action and Training Exile
The fallout from the meeting and his transfer request has had immediate consequences for Sargent's standing within the squad. After informing Clement that he was unavailable for selection in the recent match against Walsall, the player was omitted from the first team for disciplinary reasons.
Since Toronto's interest became public knowledge, Sargent has been banished to train with the club's Under-21 side, a clear signal of his diminished status. When questioned about the situation last week, boss Philippe Clement was cryptic, stating, 'I'm not going into details - but he knows why he is training with the second team and we will see how it evolves in the future.'
Norwich's Stance and Potential Replacements
Despite the acrimony, Norwich City had previously maintained a firm position on Sargent's future. The club had indicated he would not be sold during this transfer window unless their substantial valuation was met. Sargent has been a significant contributor since his arrival in 2021, netting 56 goals in 157 appearances for the Canaries.
However, Clement's comments suggest the door is not entirely closed. 'In football, you can never say never,' he admitted. 'If somebody comes tomorrow to pay £100m for Josh, he will go. Saying no to everything will not be the case, but only if it's something that's a win situation for the club (will he leave).'
In anticipation of a potential departure, Norwich have already begun scouting for replacements. The club has made enquiries regarding Kasper Hogh, the striker from Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt. They are also aware of interest in Sargent from other clubs, including Nottingham Forest, but the player's mind appears firmly set on a return to MLS with Toronto.
The situation remains fluid, but the personal rift and Sargent's unwavering family-focused priorities make a reconciliation at Norwich seem increasingly unlikely.
