Liverpool's summer transfer strategy is crystallising, with the club reportedly gearing up to make a monumental move for Athletic Club winger Nico Williams. As speculation mounts over the future of star forward Mo Salah, the Reds appear ready to trigger a release clause that could reach €100 million, equivalent to approximately £86.5 million, this upcoming transfer window.
Liverpool's Turbulent Season and Transfer Focus
It has been a rollercoaster campaign for Liverpool, marked by inconsistent performances that have seen the reigning Premier League champions suffer nine league defeats. A recent 2-1 loss to bottom-placed Wolves dented their top-four aspirations, though they avenged this with an FA Cup victory over the same opponent days later.
With their title defence effectively over, attention is shifting towards squad reinforcement for next season. Despite a £400 million spending spree last summer, significant changes are anticipated due to underperforming key players and expiring contracts.
Record-Breaking Bid for Nico Williams
According to Spanish reports, Liverpool are willing to pay the €100 million release clause for Nico Williams, a 23-year-old Spain international. This fee would set a new club record for Athletic Club. Williams, who signed a decade-long contract last year, is highly coveted across Europe, with clubs like Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, and Chelsea also monitoring his situation.
While Williams primarily operates on the left wing, unlike Salah on the right, his acquisition could help mitigate the potential loss of Salah's goal-scoring prowess and star appeal. Salah's contract runs until 2027, but his recent form dip and reported tensions with manager Arne Slot have reignited exit rumours, especially with interest from Saudi Pro League sides.
Glen Johnson Advocates for Kulusevski Alternative
Former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson has proposed Tottenham winger Dejan Kulusevski as a viable replacement for Salah. The 25-year-old Swede, currently sidelined with a knee injury, impressed in the 2024/25 season with 10 goals and 11 assists in 50 appearances for Spurs.
Johnson highlighted Kulusevski's ability to glide past defenders, akin to Salah's style, suggesting Liverpool could secure him at a reduced price if Tottenham, who are flirting with relegation, become willing sellers. He remarked, "Dejan Kulusevski a replacement for Mohamed Salah? Potentially. You know, you've seen him sort of glide past them like they're not moving. He definitely has that ability that can create something out of nothing."
Kulusevski joined Tottenham from Juventus in 2022, initially on loan, after Liverpool intercepted Spurs' pursuit of Luis Diaz. His potential availability adds another layer to Liverpool's transfer considerations as they navigate a pivotal summer.
