The immediate future of Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo hangs in the balance, with new interim boss Michael Carrick reportedly facing a tight deadline to persuade the talented youngster to stay at Old Trafford.
Carrick's urgent Mainoo mission
Michael Carrick's return to Manchester United as interim head coach comes with an immediate and pressing personnel issue. According to reports, the 44-year-old has very little time to convince 20-year-old Kobbie Mainoo that his long-term future lies with the Red Devils. Carrick was appointed on Tuesday, 13th January 2026, following the sacking of Ruben Amorim, and while securing a strong Premier League finish is a priority, resolving Mainoo's situation is equally critical.
The root of the problem lies in Mainoo's severe lack of game time under the previous manager. The England youth international made just one start this season under Amorim, a dismal Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town which United lost on penalties. The Serie A club's successful acquisition of Scott McTominay in 2024, who became the league's MVP and won the title in his debut season, demonstrates a proven pathway for United players to thrive in Naples. The prospect of following in McTominay's footsteps is believed to be a powerful lure for Mainoo.

As a result, Carrick now has until the tail end of the January transfer window to resolve the impasse. He must quickly outline a clear plan for Mainoo's involvement in the first team or risk losing the academy graduate altogether, whether on loan or in a permanent deal.
