Marc Guehi's cryptic Liverpool transfer claim as free agent looms
Marc Guehi's cryptic Liverpool transfer claim

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi has delivered a cryptic response regarding his failed summer transfer to Liverpool, as he prepares to become a free agent next summer.

Anfield Move Collapses on Deadline Day

The England international saw a proposed £35 million deadline day switch to Anfield collapse after his current club could not secure a replacement. Guehi, whose contract expires at the end of the season, has informed Palace he will not be signing a new deal.

This leaves the South London club facing a critical decision: sell their skipper in the January transfer window or risk losing him for nothing when his contract runs out in June 2026. If he becomes a free agent, a host of Europe's elite clubs are expected to compete for his signature.

"God Has a Plan For Me"

Speaking to Sky Sports News about the dramatic collapse of his Liverpool move, the 25-year-old centre-back offered a philosophical perspective. "I think everyone has this perception that it was difficult. Actually, it wasn't difficult at all," Guehi stated.

He elaborated, "When you're focused on what's the most important thing, it becomes easy. I know that God has a plan for me, and whatever that plan will be, will come into fruition at some point."

Guehi, the son of a church minister, emphasised that his primary focus remains on his performances on the pitch. "The goal and the focus has always been playing football and trying to do the best I can," he added.

The Prayer Group Behind Palace's FA Cup Glory

In a revealing insight into the squad's dynamics, Guehi and fellow defender Maxence Lacroix disclosed that the club's Christian players formed a prayer group last season. This fellowship, they believe, played a part in their historic FA Cup triumph in May 2025 – the first in Crystal Palace's history.

Lacroix, who signed from Wolfsburg in August 2024, explained the group's origins. "We have a lot of Christians here, so why don't we put games in the hands of God, of Jesus Christ?" he said. "We started to do it and after two or three games, we start to see the fruits. I think last year was an unbelievable season and everyone saw that we had the grace on us."

Guehi, who captained the side to Wembley victory, echoed this sentiment. "We have faith in Jesus Christ. And it's about exercising our faith... It's about just being together with your brothers, and showing that faith and showing that we want to play for his glory," he said.

The defender stressed that the practice continues regardless of results, stating the importance of "given all the glory and everything that we do, whether things are going well or not."

With his future beyond this season increasingly uncertain, Marc Guehi's immediate plan is clear: to continue leading Crystal Palace on the pitch, guided by the faith he shares with several teammates.
