In a fascinating revelation from the world of football transfers, former Newcastle United winger Hugo Viana has disclosed how a single, persuasive phone call from the legendary Sir Bobby Robson convinced him to turn down a move to Liverpool and instead head to St James' Park.
The Transfer Tug-of-War in 2002
As the January transfer deadline approaches, supporters often reflect on the players who might have been. Hugo Viana, now the director of football at Manchester City, was once at the centre of such a saga. Back in 2002, following an impressive debut season with Sporting CP in Portugal, the talented 19-year-old midfielder was hot property.
Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd had boldly declared Viana as "just the player Robson wants to spearhead our Champions League bid", adding to the hype by stating, "The consensus is that he's the best young player in the world." However, Liverpool, under manager Gerard Houllier, were also firmly in the race, with Portuguese teammate Abel Xavier actively encouraging Viana to become a hero at Anfield.
The Decisive Conversation with a Legend
Viana has now detailed the moment his future was decided. "At the time of the 2002 World Cup, I still had not decided on where I wanted to go," he recalled. "There were a few clubs interested in me. I spoke on the phone with Gerard Houllier at Liverpool and one of my (Portugal) team-mates, Abel Xavier, was always telling me to go there."
The pivotal shift came during a conversation with Sir Bobby Robson. "Liverpool are obviously a huge club, and I was very confused and unsure about what I wanted to do, but then I spoke to Bobby Robson and after five or ten minutes, I was clear about Newcastle," Viana explained.
Robson's personal connection proved decisive. "Mr Robson said he knew me; he'd watched some games at Sporting and in the Under-21 European Championships. He also worked at Sporting and is a legend in Portugal, so I felt more close to him and he told me he would give me time to adapt to life in England without worrying."
Embracing Newcastle Without a Prior Visit
Convinced by Robson's personal touch and assurances, Viana committed to Newcastle without even visiting the city first. "In the end, I joined Newcastle without visiting the place first, but it is an amazing city and the fans are very passionate about football; they live for it and the atmosphere was great," he said, reflecting fondly on the Geordie passion.
A Career Without Regrets
Viana's spell at Newcastle, however, did not live up to the lofty expectations. Across 61 appearances for the Magpies, he managed only four goals and nine assists. In hindsight, this might have been a relief to Liverpool, who dodged a transfer that failed to ignite in the Premier League.
Despite this, the former midfielder harbours no regrets about his career path. "During my career, I never wanted to imagine 'What if?'" he stated. "I'm not sad about my career. It could be better, sure, but it could be worse. I never look back and think what could be. It doesn't change anything; things happen without your control and it is important to adapt yourself to reality."
This story serves as a compelling reminder of the human element in football transfers, where a manager's personal influence can sometimes outweigh the prestige of a club, shaping a player's destiny in unexpected ways.
