Ashton Pub The Broadoak Named Pub of the Week for Food and Walks

The Broadoak, a historic pub on Broadoak Road in Smallshaw, Ashton-under-Lyne, has been named Pub of the Week for its welcoming atmosphere, food offerings, and proximity to local walking trails. Established in 1937, the Robinsons property has served the community for nearly 90 years and is a popular stop for hikers, dog walkers, and families visiting nearby Daisy Nook Country Park and Cockfield's Farm.

A Hub for Food, Drink, and Entertainment

Run by David Harrop, who also operates Harrop's Farm Shop Butchers & Bakery in Saddleworth, the pub has built a reputation for its food and entertainment. The menu includes loaded flatbreads, pies, sweet potato and spinach curry, freshly-grilled steaks, and burgers, with a new menu set to launch in the coming weeks. Regular live music and Motown and Soul nights draw crowds.

Historic Roots and Unique Legacy

The pub was commissioned in 1937 by former Robinsons chairman Sir John Robinson as an 'interwar roadside inn' for early motorists. In 1947, it hosted the first ever Gardener's Question Time on the BBC Home Service, originally titled How Does Your Garden Grow. The show returned in 2012 for its 65th anniversary special.

Community and Notable Guests

David Harrop said: 'We attract lots of customers from all walks of life within the local community, which is something we love so much. The thing that always sticks out is how we bring the local community together week in, week out. That’s what pubs should be all about.'

Notable regulars included Bill Tarmey, who played Jack Duckworth on Coronation Street. He lived locally and occasionally played the pub's piano, which remains part of the furniture.

Best-Selling Drinks and Atmosphere

Best-selling drinks include Madri and Unicorn, though Harrop notes strong trade across all draught options. The pub's character includes squeaky floorboards, which Harrop attributes to the building's charm rather than haunting.

The Broadoak is located at 69 Broadoak Road, Smallshaw, Ashton-under-Lyne, OL6 8QD.
