England will play an extra match at the World Cup after FIFA expanded the tournament from 32 to 48 teams, creating a round of 32 for the first time. The Three Lions, who topped Group L, will face DR Congo in the new knockout stage instead of advancing directly to the round of 16.
FIFA Expansion Creates Additional Knockout Round
FIFA's decision to increase the number of participating nations to 48 added an extra knockout bracket for teams that advanced past the group stage. This also allowed the eight best third-placed teams to reach the round of 32, increasing the drama and number of matches.
The group stages concluded dramatically with a 3-3 draw between Austria and Algeria, where both teams scored in added time. Algeria took a 93rd-minute lead that would have sent them and Iran through, but Sasa Kalajdzic equalized for Austria in the 96th minute, sending both teams to the round of 32.
England's Group Stage Performance
England secured top spot in Group L with a 2-0 victory over Panama on Saturday night. Jude Bellingham broke the deadlock after an hour of struggling against Panama's resolute defense, then provided a pinpoint cross for Harry Kane to score and become England's record World Cup goalscorer.
Manager Thomas Tuchel praised the team's performance but acknowledged areas for improvement. "We wanted to win the group. There is no substitute for wins and we have that feeling again," Tuchel said after the match. "Three days to prepare the match in Atlanta. The tournament starts new again. We had the first chapter in prep camp, then a second chapter in the group and the third chapter is coming."
Defensive Concerns Ahead of DR Congo Clash
Tuchel faces a new defensive worry after Jarell Quansah was forced off in the second half with an injury, having been deputizing at right-back for the injured Reece James. Djed Spence replaced him and completed the match, but Tuchel must assess his full-back options before facing DR Congo.
Discussing his team's defensive vulnerability, Tuchel noted: "We were a bit over-excited and over-enthusiastic to score a third and committed like full-backs and everyone up front. We ended up a bit stretched, which was not necessary. We opted for a brave approach; the boys want to play this style. It was the moment to do it and impose ourselves and play a high press. The game management when we were 2-0 up could have been better. I'm quite happy with a lot of details I saw, it's good stuff to build on."
