As England prepare to face Mexico in the World Cup in Mexico City, Londoners can get a taste of authentic Mexican cuisine right at home. Here are three top spots for real Mexican tacos in the capital.
Guacamoles
Located at 48 Rye Lane, SE15, Guacamoles offers a range of tacos from al pastor to ox tongue, beef birria, and fried fish. The taqueria is run by “Taco Manny,” who fled dangerous individuals in Mexico and sought asylum in the UK. A bargain option, three tacos cost just £11.
Proper Tacos
Found at 22 Seven Sisters Road, N7, Proper Tacos was established by Teresa Lopez, originally from Mexico, and her partner Scott Collinge. The food is described as “rich in flavour, rooted in tradition and made with soul.” Lopez uses only blue corn for tortillas, and fillings include chicken in mole—cooked with 40 spices and cacao—and nopales (fresh cactus sautéed with onion and garlic).
Homies on Donkeys
For those willing to venture further, Homies on Donkeys at 686 High Road Leytonstone, E11, offers a fun, boozy atmosphere with tacos served quickly. Co-owners Sandra Bello and Smokey Bautista highlight the camaron enchilado—king prawns flavoured with chilli, garlic, and tomato—as a standout. A vegetarian option is the mushroom barbacoa with guajillo, roasted tomato salsa, sweet onions, and coriander.
