An employee has recounted a deeply awkward workplace moment after her boss forgot to mute himself during a crucial Zoom meeting, leading to an unexpected and humorous revelation.
The Unmuted Mishap
In a viral Reddit thread titled "Overheard my boss in a Zoom meeting and I'm dead", the worker described how her boss, unaware his microphone was active, began conversing with his cat, Whiskers. She wrote, "My boss forgot he wasn't muted. Dude says to his cat, 'Mr. Whiskers, you're the only one who gets my vision'."
From Feline Praise to Colleague Critique
The situation escalated when the boss proceeded to rant about a colleague to his pet. According to the post, "Then he proceeds to rant about how 'Jenkins in accounting is a spreadsheet goblin who's tanking my vibe'. I'm SCREAMING." This candid moment exposed not only the boss's quirky side but also his frustrations with a team member.
Social Media Reaction
The confession sparked hundreds of comments, with users sharing laughter and empathy. One person commented, "This made my day. Thank you," while another called it "pure gold." The original poster even joked in response to a hiring inquiry, "Drop your resume and a cat treat and you're hired."
Interestingly, some commenters saw a positive side. A Redditor noted, "If that is the level of a boss s**t talking to his cat about work b***s***, he and the cat need to be treasured. Seems like a cool environment." Another accountant chimed in, "Thank you for sharing spreadsheet goblin. I am an accountant working with a lot of spreadsheet goblins and they will forever more be known as the spreadsheet goblins on Monday."
Not an Isolated Incident
This Zoom blunder is far from unique. In a similar mishap from 2021, Dong Wang, an associate Maths professor at the National University of Singapore, spent two hours lecturing only to realise his mic had been muted the entire time. A student informed him, "Hi Prof, actually you were muted the whole time. So we couldn’t hear anything from you since 6.08pm." His shocked reaction was captured on video and quickly went viral online.
These incidents highlight the ongoing challenges and occasional humour of remote work, where technical glitches can lead to unexpected and sometimes embarrassing moments in professional settings.
