Apple has announced that iOS 27, launching in September 2026, will deliver a significant speed boost to older iPhones, including the iPhone 11 and iPhone 12. According to Apple, apps will open up to 30 percent faster, photos will load up to 70 percent faster between devices, and AirDrop transfers could be up to 80 percent quicker on supported phones.
CPU Scheduler for Older Models
The performance improvements are driven by a new feature called the CPU scheduler, which prioritises the app currently in use on screen rather than spreading processing power across background tasks. This technology is not limited to the latest iPhone 17 Pro Max; older devices such as the iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 will also benefit. Apple says the scheduler continuously adjusts how the phone uses its resources to deliver a faster and smoother experience.
Extended Device Lifespan
Apple believes the update could extend the life of older iPhones and reduce the pressure for users to upgrade devices that are still working well. "Improvements across platforms push key system capabilities forward so everyday tasks feel faster, smoother, and more enjoyable," Apple said in a statement.

Alongside the performance boost, iOS 27 includes a smarter Siri, enhanced Apple Intelligence features, improved photo editing tools, smarter parental controls, and new ways to personalise the Liquid Glass design. Apple has not confirmed an exact release date, but iOS 27 is expected to launch in September 2026.
