Kate Garraway Condemns AI Hoax That Created Fake Boyfriend and Targeted Son

Kate Garraway has condemned a cruel online prank that used artificial intelligence to generate fake images of her with a new boyfriend, just months after her husband Derek Draper died from Long Covid complications in 2024. The 58-year-old TV presenter, who recently appeared on The Celebrity Traitors, said the images began appearing nearly a year ago and escalated to fake news sites targeting her son Billy, 16.

Speaking on ITV's Good Morning Britain, Garraway said: “(It was) quite a raw time for myself and the children. These things started happening mainly on Facebook.” She explained that she does not use Facebook and that there are many fake accounts in her name. The hoax came to light when people approached her on the street saying they were pleased she had found love.

Garraway revealed that even her co-star Ranvir Singh was fooled by the images. Singh admitted: “Well, I thought Kate would have told me. It was confusing to me!” Garraway described how in late 2025, fake news sites began publishing articles claiming her son Billy was “destroying the relationship because of his selfishness and missing his dad.” She said: “I thought, this is awful, because his teachers could be reading this, trusting it as a news source.”

The broadcaster urged the public to use trusted news sources and called the images “hurtful” to her children. Her comments came after X announced new restrictions on its AI chatbot Grok to prevent it from generating sexualised images, following public outcry. Regulator Ofcom launched an investigation into Grok earlier this week and welcomed the new restrictions.
