Meta is reportedly creating an artificial intelligence version of its founder and chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg, to allow employees to interact with a digital clone of the boss. This initiative aims to foster a stronger connection between staff and one of Silicon Valley's most influential figures.

Training the AI on Zuckerberg's Persona

The AI clone is being meticulously trained on Zuckerberg's public statements, thoughts on company strategy, tone, and mannerisms. With nearly 79,000 employees at Meta, this project seeks to provide workers with an accessible resource for queries, enhancing internal communication and engagement.

According to the Financial Times, the rationale is to make employees feel more connected to leadership. Zuckerberg, worth over $220 billion, is actively involved in training his animated AI, using images and his voice to develop the character.

Historical Context and Broader Applications

Zuckerberg has a history of experimenting with digital versions of himself, notably sharing an avatar in the metaverse in 2022, which faced criticism for its graphics. Meta has since scaled back its metaverse ambitions, shifting focus to AI-generated 3D characters for everyday conversations.

The company believes this Zuckerberg experiment could be replicated by influencers and creators, addressing challenges in the digital avatar economy. Synthesia, a UK-based startup valued at $4 billion, noted that realistic AI video and voice can significantly boost engagement and retention in workplace settings.

Internal AI Integration and Efficiency Goals

Meta is driving AI integration internally to lower costs and accelerate work pace. Zuckerberg has emphasized efficiency, stating in January that the company is "elevating individual contributors and flattening teams." A "CEO agent" AI system is already helping him prepare for meetings and access company information faster.

This move is part of Meta's broader investment in AI to compete with tech rivals, aiming to develop "superintelligence"—systems outperforming humans in cognitive tasks. Recently, Meta launched Muse Spark, an advanced AI model praised for language and visual understanding, though it lags in coding and abstract reasoning.

Legal and Social Challenges

Meta faces legal setbacks, including a $375 million penalty in New Mexico for misleading consumers about platform safety and enabling harms like child exploitation. In California, a court found Instagram addictive, harming a young user.

Amid these issues, UK Labour leader Keir Starmer called for action against addictive scrolling mechanisms on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, with Britain considering bans or curfews for under-16s. Meta has not commented on these developments.
