French toast can be made without a frying pan, offering a simpler alternative that avoids burnt edges and a soggy interior. Founder of Now Cook This, Michelle, shared an easier method: cooking French toast in the oven. She said: "The first time I made French toast in the oven, I couldn't believe how easy and delicious it was. It's been my go-to ever since. And I'd be willing to bet that, once you try it, it'll become yours too!"
Why Oven-Baked French Toast Is Better
Frying bread on the stove can be time-consuming and messy, with oil splattering and causing the outside to cook too quickly. The oven method eliminates these issues. According to the Express, cooking French toast in the oven ensures every part of the bread cooks evenly at the same time, achieving a crispy texture without charring or a raw middle. It also allows you to make a larger batch all at once.
How to Make French Toast in the Oven
Ingredients
- Eight slices of brioche bread
- Four large eggs
- 240ml of whole milk
- One teaspoon of vanilla extract
- Half a teaspoon of cinnamon
- Pinch of salt (about a quarter teaspoon)
- Butter (optional)
- Maple syrup (optional)
- Cooking spray
Method
- Preheat the oven to 220°C (200°C for fan ovens or Gas Mark 7). Spray a generous amount of cooking spray onto a large sheet pan tray.
- Crack the eggs into a medium bowl, then add the milk, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and salt. Stir until completely combined.
- Pour the egg mixture into the tray and place the bread slices in a single layer on top. Let the bread sit for one minute to soak, then flip it over. Leave for a few minutes until the batter is absorbed.
- Place in the oven for 10 to 12 minutes until the French toast is perfectly crispy and golden. Serve immediately, drizzled with butter, maple syrup, or other toppings as desired.
