Supermarket Manager's Peak District Photo Wins International Acclaim

A supermarket manager from Langley Mill has won a category in the International Garden Photographer of the Year competition with a stunning sunset image captured at Bamford Edge in the Peak District.

Lee Howdle, 35, took first place in the Breathing Spaces category for his photograph titled 'Bamford Beauty'. It is the first time since 2014 that a photo from England has won this category, which has previously featured scenes from Italy, the US, Iceland and New Zealand.

Mr Howdle described the moment as 'mind-blowing' and said he was 'speechless' upon learning of his win. He began taking landscape photos on his mobile phone during morning runs at age 21, later developing an interest in wildlife photography. His fascination with Peak District views began in 2018.

The winning image captures a fiery sunset sky, low-hanging mist, a wall leading to Ladybower Reservoir, and blooming heather. Mr Howdle called it 'the best scene' he had witnessed in the national park and a 'wow moment' he will remember forever.

He entered the prestigious competition for the first time last October, submitting seven photographs, three of which were shortlisted. Despite his success, he says he will not take up photography full-time but plans to enter again this year.

'Bamford Beauty' is now on display at the Royal Botanic Gardens in London until 6 March.
