Elon Musk and Linda Yaccarino, key figures at the social media platform X, have been formally summoned for voluntary interviews in Paris. This move is part of an ongoing French investigation into the platform's operations, which has escalated following a recent search at X's French offices.
Scope of the French Investigation
The Paris prosecutor's cybercrime unit is leading the probe, which focuses on several serious allegations. These include alleged complicity in possessing and spreading child sex abuse material, the dissemination of sexually explicit deepfakes, denial of crimes against humanity, and manipulation of automated data processing systems on X. The investigation aims to ensure that the platform complies with French legal standards, particularly concerning online safety and content regulation.
International Tensions and Legal Challenges
In a development that highlights international legal complexities, the US Department of Justice has reportedly declined to assist French authorities in this matter. American officials have accused the French of using the criminal legal system to interfere with an American business and impinge on free expression rights. This stance underscores the broader geopolitical tensions surrounding digital platform governance and cross-border law enforcement.
Additional Complaints from Media Watchdogs
Separately, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has lodged a new complaint against X. The media freedom organization alleges that the platform's policies facilitate the proliferation of disinformation, thereby violating the public's right to reliable information. This complaint adds to the mounting scrutiny X faces from both regulatory bodies and advocacy groups over its content moderation practices.
Amid these legal challenges, X has also taken internal measures, such as restricting its Grok photo editing feature due to concerns about sexualised images. This action reflects ongoing efforts to address content issues, though it remains to be seen how it will impact the broader investigation in France.
