The online gaming community is mourning the loss of a beloved figure, Agnes, better known to millions as Epic Gamer Grandma. The 78-year-old TikTok star passed away peacefully on 21 December, her family has announced.
A Peaceful Passing and a Life Celebrated
Her grandson, Culsans, shared the news in a heartfelt statement on her Instagram account on Tuesday 23 December. He revealed that Agnes died with her daughter, Pauline, holding her hand. "She left this world the way she lived in it: surrounded by love," he wrote. The family expressed being "completely heartbroken, but also incredibly proud" of the woman who held their family together and became an unexpected internet sensation.
Health Struggles and a Global Following
The announcement follows concerning updates about her health in October. Culsans had previously explained that her absence from posting was due to a significant worsening of her Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), which required an ambulance call. Just two days later, she suffered a major stroke and underwent heavy treatment.
Despite these challenges, Agnes amassed a huge online following by sharing her passion for video games. She had:
- Over 2.4 million followers on TikTok
- 858,000 followers on Instagram
- 117,000 subscribers on YouTube
Her content often featured her playing popular games like Minecraft and Phasmophobia, charming viewers with her humour and skill.
Legacy of Love and Breaking Stereotypes
In his tribute, Culsans painted a picture of Agnes as a devoted mother, grandmother, and friend long before her online fame—a person who "made sure everyone else was fed before herself." He reflected on her unexpected role as "Scotland's biggest elderly creator," a title that brought her joy and connection.
"She showed that you can be in your seventies and still find new communities, new friendships, new ways to express yourself," he wrote. "She reminded people that our elders are not invisible." He emphasised that even in her final months, when she lost the ability to speak, her eyes retained their characteristic kindness and quiet strength.
Culsans extended profound gratitude to her global fanbase, stating that their support meant "more than we can ever explain." He assured them that "her story does not end here" and will live on perpetually on the internet. He concluded with a touching nod to her late husband, George: "You completed the game of life, with a perfect score, and your player 2, George, is waiting for you to start another."
