Todd Howard Delivers Significant Elder Scrolls 6 Insights Amid Continued Anticipation

Bethesda Game Studios creative director Todd Howard has provided fans with a substantial update regarding the highly anticipated The Elder Scrolls 6, while simultaneously tempering expectations by emphasizing that the game's release remains a considerable distance away. During a recent appearance on the Kinda Funny Gamescast, Howard offered detailed commentary on the project's direction and development status.

Returning to Classic Bethesda Formula

Howard explicitly stated that The Elder Scrolls 6 will mark a deliberate return to the studio's traditional gaming formula, which he described as having been temporarily diverted by recent titles. "If you look at our games, we've always evolved," Howard explained. "We do have a certain style that we like, and our fans like, that we want to get better and better at."

The creative director specifically identified Fallout 76 and Starfield as representing "a little bit of a creative detour" from the classic approach seen in earlier titles like Skyrim, Fallout 3, Fallout 4, and Oblivion. "As we come back to Elder Scrolls 6 that we're doing now, we're coming back to that classic style that we've missed, that we know really well," Howard affirmed.

Technological Advancements with Creation Engine 3

Howard revealed that Bethesda has invested several years in evolving their proprietary technology to support the new installment. "We've spent the last several years bringing Creation Engine 2, which powered Starfield, up to Creation Engine 3 that's going to power The Elder Scrolls 6 and beyond," he disclosed.

This technological advancement promises to enhance both visual quality and performance. "We're really happy with the new stuff that we're doing," Howard elaborated. "World systems, loading, how we bring things into the world, how we get that detail close to the camera. We have a style of game that we really like that I think people expect from us and there's a lot of innovation to be done there still so when you step into a world you feel like you're experiencing it for the first time."

Development Progress and Team Composition

Despite the extended development timeline, Howard confirmed that The Elder Scrolls 6 has reached a playable state internally and is approaching a significant milestone. He noted that most of the development team responsible for Skyrim remains with the studio and is now focused on the new project.

Howard expressed his personal preference for minimal pre-release publicity, citing Fallout 4's launch strategy and the recent surprise release of the Oblivion remaster as examples. "My preference is always you hear nothing, and then the game is out," he stated, while acknowledging that this approach isn't always feasible.

Early Announcement Rationale and Fan Expectations

The creative director explained that Bethesda announced The Elder Scrolls 6 as early as 2018 primarily to reassure fans following the simultaneous announcements of Fallout 76 and Starfield, which represented substantial departures from their established formula. The studio wanted to confirm that the beloved fantasy franchise remained a priority, even if the next installment would require nearly a decade of development.

While the confirmation of a playable build indicates meaningful progress, Howard emphasized that fans should maintain realistic expectations regarding the release timeline. With the majority of Bethesda Game Studios' resources now dedicated to The Elder Scrolls 6, including Howard's personal focus, development appears to be advancing steadily toward an eventual launch date that remains unspecified.
