Major Rescue Operation on Queensboro Bridge After Teen Falls in TikTok Incident

A teenage boy has been rescued in a critical condition after plummeting 50 feet into a confined shaft on a New York City bridge during a TikTok stunt that authorities say went horribly wrong. The incident occurred on the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge, which connects the boroughs of Manhattan and Queens, prompting a large-scale emergency response on Monday night.

Emergency Services Mount Complex Rescue Effort

The New York City Fire Department received a report of a person trapped in a confined space within one of the bridge's buttresses. FDNY Deputy Chief Nicholas Corrado stated that authorities arrived at the scene within three minutes. A total of 75 first responders were deployed to assist in what was described as a highly challenging operation.

"This was a confined-space operation, which is a very difficult, time-consuming, manpower-intensive operation," Corrado explained during a press briefing. "It involves high-angle equipment, ropes, we have to monitor the air, and create high points."

The victim, identified in local news reports as a 16-year-old boy from Lynbrook on Long Island, was found approximately 50 feet down the shaft from the buttress on the lower level of the Queens side. Reports suggest he may have been stuck for around three hours before being located by rescue teams.

Victim Hospitalised with Hypothermia and Critical Injuries

After an extensive rescue operation, the teenager was extracted from the shaft, packaged for transport, and rushed to an ambulance. EMS Deputy Chief Staci Grguric confirmed the boy was in a "critical" condition when he was taken to the nearby New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center for urgent medical attention.

According to The Daily News, the teen was suffering from hypothermia, although this has not been independently verified. Police provided an update on Tuesday, indicating that the boy's condition had stabilised and he was now stable, as reported by local news outlet PIX11.

TikTok Stunt Blamed for Dangerous Fall

Unnamed sources informed The New York Post that the teenager was allegedly filming a video for the social media platform TikTok when he accidentally fell into the bridge shaft. This incident adds to a growing list of dangerous trends promoted on social media that have resulted in serious injuries or fatalities.

In recent years, there have been numerous horror stories involving TikTok challenges gone wrong. Earlier this month, a nine-year-old boy from Illinois suffered severe burns after following a TikTok trend that involved heating a toy in a microwave. In October 2024, then-New York City Mayor Eric Adams issued a stark warning about the perils of subway surfing, a dangerous practice that has gained popularity through social media exposure.

"Subway surfing is a deadly trap, one that is endangering more and more young people who see others doing it on social media," Adams cautioned. "But those five minutes of online fame could lead to years of regret and pain, or a lifetime of trauma and heartbreak for a family that loses a child."

The Independent has reached out to both the FDNY and the New York City Police Department for further comment on this latest incident. The rescue highlights the ongoing risks associated with social media-driven stunts and the immense resources required when such activities lead to emergencies.
