Louis Theroux's Netflix Documentary Delves into Controversial Influencer HSTikkyTokky
In a revealing new feature-length documentary for Netflix, acclaimed journalist Louis Theroux turns his investigative lens on the contentious online world known as the "manosphere." The film, titled Inside The Manosphere, prominently features TikTok influencer HSTikkyTokky, whose real name is Harrison Sullivan, exposing his controversial practices and legal troubles.
The Manosphere and Harrison Sullivan's Lucrative Empire
The documentary explores how Harrison Sullivan, a 24-year-old from Essex, has built a substantial financial empire by coaching young men on how to achieve financial independence. He promotes his services with the mantra of teaching followers "how to make money and not have a boss telling you what to do." This approach has garnered him significant attention within the manosphere, an online community that often champions extreme forms of masculinity.
However, Theroux's investigation uncovers darker aspects of Sullivan's activities. The influencer has faced serious legal issues, including narrowly avoiding a jail sentence after crashing his supercar at high speed and evading justice for over a year. Additionally, the Financial Conduct Authority has issued warnings against Britons using his financial services, highlighting their unauthorised status.
Controversial Business Practices Exposed
The documentary reveals how Sullivan and other figures in the manosphere exploit trends for financial gain. Sullivan promotes questionable cryptocurrency apps and online trading platforms that promise enormous returns to investors, despite regulatory warnings. In one particularly telling scene, Sullivan interviews porn star Bonnie Blue for his social media feeds, directing users to her OnlyFans page in exchange for a commission, while simultaneously expressing personal disgust toward her.
Theroux also meets with Justin Waller, a Louisiana construction entrepreneur who markets himself as a success coach to nearly three million followers. Waller directs his audience to Andrew Tate's "online business school" for $49 per month, earning commissions on sign-ups, and claims a personal net worth exceeding $30 million.
Parental Concerns and Societal Impact
Speaking to the Mirror, Louis Theroux emphasized the importance of addressing these issues, particularly as a father of sons. He expressed concern that young people spend more time on their phones than in conversation with parents, often consuming content without parental knowledge. "I think as a parent you hope that your influence will outweigh whatever they're being fed online," Theroux stated, highlighting the documentary's relevance to contemporary parenting challenges.
Journalist Clara Gaspar, who has investigated the programme, noted in the Daily Mail that the manosphere operates as a lucrative business by keeping followers angry and dispossessed. At its core is the concept of 'sexual market value' (SMV), a simplistic belief that dating functions as a marketplace where men accumulate value through money and status, while women trade primarily on youth and beauty.
The documentary has been praised in reviews, including one by the Mirror, for its thorough examination of these influential online spaces and their real-world consequences.
