A former senior Nintendo employee has issued a stark warning to gamers, stating that a price increase for the highly popular Nintendo Switch 2 console is now 'inevitable'. This prediction follows recent price hikes by competitors Sony and Microsoft on their PlayStation 5 and Xbox consoles, signalling a broader trend of rising costs in the gaming hardware market.
Economic Pressures Mounting on Console Pricing
The former Nintendo sales lead, identified as Sean, shared his insights during a recent appearance on the Kit & Krysta podcast. He detailed multiple economic factors converging to force Nintendo's hand. "Unfortunately, I think eventually the hardware price is going to have to go up," Sean stated, directly addressing consumer hopes for a bargain purchase.
Key Drivers Behind the Expected Price Surge
Sean outlined several critical issues impacting production and distribution costs. Persistent global inflation has been a long-standing problem, now compounded by more recent tariffs that show no signs of disappearing. Additionally, the explosive demand for artificial intelligence technology is driving up memory chip prices, a crucial component in modern gaming consoles.
"Within the past couple of weeks, we have issues with oil prices going through the roof," Sean continued. "When oil goes through the roof, that's not just shipping costs that go up. To get the games from wherever they're being manufactured, to the warehouse, to the retailers, to the shelf, that's going to drive the price up."
The ongoing conflict in the Middle East further exacerbates these inflationary pressures, creating additional challenges for maintaining current price points.
Nintendo's Potential Mitigation Strategies
Despite these daunting economic headwinds, Sean noted that Nintendo does have some options to potentially delay the inevitable price adjustment. The company's substantial revenue from merchandise sales and legacy franchise earnings—such as the recently released Super Mario Galaxy Movie—could provide temporary relief.
Nintendo has already implemented strategic pricing adjustments in other areas of their business. The company recently announced that physical copies of games will now carry a slightly higher price tag than their digital counterparts. This differential pricing approach represents one method Nintendo might use to absorb some cost increases without immediately passing them on to consumers through console price hikes.
Market Context and Consumer Implications
The Nintendo Switch 2 launched in June 2025 with a retail price of £395.99 for the standard edition, or £429.99 for the Mario Kart World bundle. While no specific price increase amount has been suggested, the recent £90 price bump across all PlayStation 5 models provides a concerning precedent for what might be in store for Switch 2 buyers.
"So they may be able to put off raising hardware prices for a moment, but I think it's inevitable that they're going to go up for the first time," Sean concluded, emphasizing that this would mark the first price increase for the Switch 2 since its release.
For consumers considering a Nintendo Switch 2 purchase, the message is clear: acting sooner rather than later might be the wisest financial decision before any official price adjustment takes effect in the coming months.
