Sony Interactive Entertainment has begun rolling out age verification for PlayStation users in the UK and Ireland, aligning with the UK's Online Safety Act. The system, currently optional, will become mandatory from June.
Players who fail to verify their age risk losing access to social and online features, including voice and text chat, messaging, and third-party tools like Discord. Broadcasting features such as streaming to YouTube and Twitch may also be disabled.
Certain in-game features tied to user-generated content, including chat systems and content sharing tools, could become inaccessible. Sony noted that specific restrictions may vary by game as titles update their implementations.
Sony uses verification service Yoti, allowing age confirmation via government-issued ID, facial age estimation, or mobile network check. The company stated it aims to deliver an age-appropriate experience and support online safety.
Microsoft has already implemented a similar system for Xbox users. The move reflects a broader industry shift towards tighter regulation of online spaces, particularly around protecting younger players and moderating content.
