Artemis II Astronauts Finalise Splashdown Preparations After Moon Mission
As the Artemis II mission nears its conclusion, the crew of four astronauts is intensifying efforts to ensure a safe return to Earth. NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, alongside Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen, are meticulously preparing for splashdown, following a successful lunar flyby that captured rare images of a solar eclipse.
Configuring the Orion Capsule for Re-entry
The astronauts have begun the critical process of configuring the Orion capsule for re-entry into Earth's atmosphere. This involves stowing equipment, securing cargo, and adjusting crew seats to optimise safety and comfort during the descent. These steps are essential to mitigate risks and ensure the spacecraft is ready for the intense heat and forces of re-entry.
Reviewing Procedures and Weather Updates
As part of their daily schedule, the crew is reviewing updated weather briefings, the status of recovery forces, and the detailed entry timeline. They are also working through post-landing procedures, which include protocols for exiting the capsule and initial medical checks upon splashdown. This thorough preparation helps coordinate with ground teams for a seamless recovery operation.
Trajectory Adjustments and Splashdown Timeline
Orion's thrusters are scheduled to ignite for a second return trajectory correction burn at 9:53 p.m. EDT, fine-tuning the spacecraft's path toward Earth. This manoeuvre is crucial for achieving the precise splashdown target. The splashdown is scheduled for approximately 8:07 p.m. ET (5:07 p.m. PT) on Friday, April 10, off the coast of San Diego, where NASA ground teams are finalising preparations for re-entry and recovery.
The Artemis II mission marks a significant step in lunar exploration, with the crew's return poised to provide valuable data for future missions, including planned lunar landings. As the astronauts complete their preparations, anticipation builds for a successful conclusion to this historic journey.
