NASA Astronaut's Fortune Cookie Prediction Comes True on Lunar Mission
NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman foresaw his journey to the moon nearly a decade ago, thanks to a fortune cookie that foretold a 'visit to a strange place'. A recently rediscovered tweet from 2017 shows the Artemis II commander holding a small slip of paper with this prophetic message.
The fortune read: 'A visit to a strange place will bring you renewed perspective,' accompanied by some lucky numbers. Wiseman shared the image on X with the caption: 'I choose to believe this fortune I received tonight. Perhaps the moon or a #JourneyToMars.'
While fortune cookies are often seen as novelties or jokes, this one seemed to predict destiny. This week, Wiseman became one of four astronauts to set a new distance record, traveling further from Earth than anyone before during a mission around the dark side of the moon.
Historic Lunar Flyby and Prophecy Fulfillment
The Orion crew completed a six-hour flyby around the moon on Monday, marking the first time in over half a century that humans have witnessed the distant hemisphere with the naked eye. NASA recently reshared Wiseman's historic tweet, adding checkmarks next to 'Strange place' and 'New perspective' to signify the prophecy had come true.
Space enthusiasts expressed their amazement in the comments. One wrote: 'That's one fortune cookie that delivered on a cosmic scale.' Another added: 'Nine years later, the fortune came through in the most epic way.'
Some joked about buying lottery tickets with the numbers on the fortune slip, noting that the first number, 47, is considered lucky across many cultures. The number 22 is also viewed as powerful in numerology, symbolizing the ability to turn ambitious dreams into reality.
Emotional Tribute and Mission Details
After slingshotting around the moon and breaking the Apollo 13 distance record, Wiseman and the Artemis II crew are now heading home. A poignant moment occurred when the team requested to name a 'bright spot' on the moon after Wiseman's late wife, Carroll.
During a chat with mission control, Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen explained: 'Our science team helped us identify some newly-formed craters on the moon that haven't been named. We'd like to propose calling one Carroll, in memory of Reid's wife.'
Carroll Taylor Wiseman, a nurse in a newborn intensive care unit, passed away in 2020 at age 46 after battling cancer. Wiseman, a former fighter pilot, has been raising their two daughters as a single parent since then.
Ahead of the mission, which involves a 685,000-mile round-trip to the moon, Wiseman discussed death plans with his children, emphasizing the risks and the importance of exploration.
