Sky & Virgin Media lose 9 channels: MTV music stations axed in 24-hour warning
Sky & Virgin Media lose 9 channels including MTV

Subscribers to Sky and Virgin Media are facing an immediate and significant reduction in their channel line-up, with a major TV shake-up confirmed to take effect in just 24 hours.

Which Channels Are Disappearing?

From tomorrow, 31 December 2025, viewers will suddenly find several popular music channels gone. The closure, first announced in October, will see the removal of five MTV-branded stations: MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live. Anyone checking their TV planner for these channels is already being met with a stark message: “This channel is now closed.”

This is not the only content being pulled. The shake-up also spells the end for four children's entertainment channels: Pop, Tiny Pop, Pop+1, and Tiny Pop+1. In total, nine channels will vanish from the platforms at the year's end.

Why Are These MTV Channels Closing?

The move marks a symbolic end for a broadcaster that once defined a generation. After nearly 40 years on air, MTV's dedicated music channels have become the latest casualty in the relentless shift from traditional television to on-demand streaming. A source speaking to The Sun described MTV as “a victim of the rise of streaming,” adding it was “a dark day for the music industry.”

The iconic channel, which launched in 1981 and revolutionised music consumption and video culture, has seen audiences dwindle. Many now turn to platforms like YouTube and TikTok for their music and entertainment fixes. This trend is global, with MTV services in parts of Asia, Australia, and Latin America also reportedly being discontinued.

Is This The End For MTV Entirely?

Not completely. While the music-focused channels are being shut down, MTV HD will remain available on Sky and Virgin Media. This channel will continue to broadcast reality programming such as Naked Dating UK and Geordie Shore.

For long-time viewers, the change signifies the closing of a major chapter in television history. MTV was instrumental in shaping youth culture and launching countless music and television careers. Its dedicated music channels, however, could not withstand the tectonic shift in how audiences now discover and watch content.
