Virgin Media customers could lose access to ITV channels as a dispute between the two companies escalates. The disagreement centres on whether ITV's main channel should be carried for free under public service broadcasting regulations, or whether Virgin Media should pay for it.
ITV's new chief executive, Carolyn McCall, is seeking a broader deal that would increase payments for the entire channel package. While talks have not broken down, the public nature of the dispute has created what sources describe as an 'opportunistic' moment for ITV to apply commercial pressure.
If ITV channels are removed, customers may be able to leave their contracts penalty-free, according to Martin Lewis of Money Saving Expert. He noted that some customers successfully negotiated reductions or exits during a similar dispute with UKTV.
ITV channels remain available via Freeview, BT, TalkTalk, and Sky, as well as through the ITV Hub streaming service. The situation follows Virgin Media's recent loss of UKTV channels, which included popular free-to-air and pay-TV options.
