Pilots on United Airlines Flight 1513 reported a terrifying near miss with a drone as the Boeing 737 prepared to land at Newark Liberty International Airport on Friday. The aircraft, carrying 106 passengers and five crew members, came within approximately 100 feet of the drone, according to air traffic control recordings.
Pilot's Warning and Incident Details
In the audio, a pilot can be heard saying, “We almost hit a drone.” The object was described as circular, roughly three feet wide, and “about 100 feet below us.” The flight, which originated from Key West, Florida, landed safely around 5:30 p.m., and no injuries were reported.
United Airlines confirmed the incident, stating: "United Flight 1513 reported a potential drone sighting prior to arriving in Newark. The flight landed safely, and customers deplaned normally at the gate." Shortly after, another pilot flying into Newark also reported seeing a drone at around 2,000 feet, according to air traffic control communications.
FAA Investigation and Drone Regulations
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation into the incident. The FAA receives more than 100 reports of drones operating near airports every month. Flying a drone in controlled airspace without authorization is illegal in the U.S. and can carry significant penalties, including criminal charges.
Broader Context and Safety Concerns
This near miss highlights ongoing safety concerns regarding unauthorized drone activity near airports. The incident adds to a growing list of close calls that have prompted calls for stricter enforcement and enhanced detection technologies to protect commercial aviation.
