Cleaning enthusiast Melissa George, founder of Polished Habitat, has shared a simple method to remove burnt-on brown stains from oven glass doors using a magic eraser, eliminating the need for scrubbing or chemical cleaners. The technique involves alternating between a dry and a slightly damp melamine foam sponge, which gently abrades stains away.
How the Magic Eraser Works
Magic erasers are made from melamine foam, which acts as a mild abrasive. When rubbed across a surface, the foam's micro-scouring action lifts baked-on food debris, oil, and grease without harsh chemicals. George described the method as "magic" and noted that it can tackle even years of accumulated grime.
"Is your oven glass dirty? Try this simple and affordable tip for cleaning your oven window without spray chemicals," George said. She emphasized that no additional cleaners are required, making it a natural and cost-effective solution.
Step-by-Step Cleaning Process
To thoroughly clean an oven door, George recommends using two magic erasers: one dry and one slightly damp. She explained, "I found alternating between wet and dry magic erasers worked the best to get rid of all the grime." The sponges break down like pencil erasers during use, so having two ensures enough material for the job.
"If your oven is in anything near the code red situation mine was, you're going to want two Magic Erasers for this job," she added. Users should focus on one small section at a time, applying light pressure in a circular motion. Scrubbing large areas back-and-forth is less effective, as insufficient pressure is applied.
Results in 10 to 15 Minutes
George reported that her own oven door, which had "years of gunk" including residue from a brief fire, was cleaned in just 10 to 15 minutes. "I did have to use some heavy pressure in places. But I didn't use any chemicals or cleaners other than the magic eraser," she said. The result was a gleaming glass surface free of burn marks with minimal effort.
Availability and Cost
Magic erasers are widely available at supermarkets and are inexpensive, making them an accessible alternative to specialized oven cleaners. This method is particularly useful for households seeking to avoid chemical sprays and reduce scrubbing time.
