Deadly Floods Claim Five Lives in Oman as Vehicles Swept Away
At least five people have tragically lost their lives in Oman over the past 24 hours after their vehicles were swept away by powerful floodwaters, authorities confirmed on Monday. The incidents occurred as heavy rainfall battered various regions of the country, leading to dangerous conditions in wadis and low-lying areas.
Rescue Efforts and Fatal Incidents
Oman's Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority reported that seven individuals were successfully rescued after a vehicle carrying ten people was swept away in a wadi located in the Wilayat of Barka. Unfortunately, the remaining three occupants were later found deceased, bringing the total fatalities from this single incident to three. In a separate and equally devastating event, two citizens perished when their vehicle was carried away by floodwaters in a wadi in the Wilayat of Al-Maawil. Their bodies have since been recovered by emergency teams.
Historical Context of Flooding in Oman
These latest fatalities underscore the persistent threat of severe flooding in Oman, a country with a history of devastating weather events. Notably, in April 2024, flash floods claimed at least 20 lives and submerged extensive areas, causing widespread damage and disruption. The recurring nature of such incidents highlights the challenges faced by authorities in managing flood risks, particularly in vulnerable regions prone to sudden torrential downpours.
Rescue operations continue as teams work to assess the full impact of the recent floods and ensure the safety of residents in affected areas. The government has urged citizens to exercise extreme caution, avoid crossing flooded wadis, and adhere to weather warnings issued by meteorological agencies.
