The UK is on high alert as dozens of flood warnings have been activated following a weekend of heavy rain, with forecasters issuing a severe 'danger to life' amber weather warning for south Wales.
Widespread Weather Warnings
The Met Office's amber warning for heavy rain came into effect in south Wales in the early hours of Monday morning and is expected to last throughout the entire day, with downpours predicted to continue until early Tuesday. Simultaneously, yellow warnings for rain cover the southwest and northwest of England, plus central and northern Wales.
In total, the Environment Agency has issued 35 flood alerts for rivers across England. Natural Resources Wales has added another 10 alerts to the tally, urging residents to be prepared for potential flooding.
Significant Rainfall Predictions
Meteorologists are forecasting exceptionally high rainfall totals, particularly in south Wales. Some areas could see between 100mm and 120mm of rain throughout Monday. Lower-lying areas within the amber warning zone are still expected to receive a substantial 20mm to 40mm.
The wet weather is not confined to Wales. Forecasts suggest up to 40mm could fall in parts of Derbyshire, northwest England, and Yorkshire and Humber. Higher ground in regions like Exmoor, Dorset, the Mendips, and the Cotswolds may see accumulations of up to 50mm.
Official Warnings and Public Advice
Mike Silverstone, Deputy Chief Forecaster at the Met Office, confirmed the severity of the situation, stating, "Heavy rain will move over south Wales from late Sunday and through Monday. The largest accumulations are expected over the highest ground." The warnings highlight significant risks, including:
- Potential flooding of homes and businesses
- Severe travel disruption
- Power cuts
- Fast-flowing or deep floodwater, presenting a danger to life
Richard Preece, Duty Tactical Manager for Natural Resources Wales, urged the public to take immediate precautions. "We are asking people to be alert for potential flooding," he said. "With some rivers already swollen and the ground saturated, we expect to see a number of flood alerts and warnings issued." He advised people to prepare a flood kit, move cars to higher ground, and keep away from swollen rivers.
This latest bout of severe weather comes just weeks after Storm Claudia caused major flooding in Monmouth, south-east Wales, where a major incident was declared and residents had to be rescued from their homes.
