Met Office Urges Drivers in 108 UK Areas to Pack 9 Essential Items
108 UK areas told to pack 9 items for snow and ice

The Met Office has issued a stark warning to drivers across the United Kingdom, urging them to prepare their vehicles for severe winter conditions. With multiple weather warnings for snow and ice in force until Monday, forecasters are advising motorists in 108 different local authority areas to keep a kit of nine essential items in their cars.

Widespread Warnings for Snow and Ice

An extensive series of yellow and amber alerts now blankets maps of England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. The forecaster warns that some regions, particularly in northern and eastern Scotland, could see accumulations of up to 40 centimetres (16 inches) of snow, bringing a risk of "temporary blizzard conditions". Across the UK, the public is being told to expect significant travel delays, road closures, possible power cuts, and hazardous icy surfaces.

The Essential Nine-Item Checklist

To ensure safety during potential breakdowns or long delays, the Met Office explicitly recommends all drivers carry the following items:

  • Warm clothing
  • Food and water
  • A blanket
  • A torch
  • Ice scraper and de-icer
  • A warning triangle
  • A high-visibility vest
  • An in-car phone charger

The advice stresses that being prepared can be critical during the expected travel disruption.

Regional Breakdown of the Alerts

The warnings are detailed and extensive. In Scotland, an amber warning for snow is active from midday on Friday until midday on Saturday, covering Angus, Perth and Kinross, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Moray, and Highland. Here, the most extreme conditions are forecast.

A separate yellow warning for snow and ice covers nearly all of northern Scotland until midnight on Friday, with up to 30cm possible on high ground.

For Northern Ireland, a yellow warning for snow and ice runs from midnight to 10am on Friday, affecting all six counties, with up to 2cm of snow possible in the north.

A major yellow warning for snow and ice spans a vast area of England and Wales from midnight tonight until midday on Friday. This includes the East Midlands, East of England, London, the South East, North West, South West, West Midlands, and most of Wales. Accumulations of 2-5cm are possible in some areas.

Furthermore, a yellow warning for the east coast of England is in place for all of Saturday, affecting areas from Norfolk up to Northumberland and North Yorkshire, where up to 8cm of snow could settle.

Finally, an expanded warning for snow and ice covers much of Scotland for all of Saturday and Sunday, where another 15-30cm could fall on high ground.

Staying Safe During the Cold Snap

The core message from the Met Office and emergency responders is one of preparation and caution. Drivers are urged to check the latest forecasts and road conditions before travelling, allow extra time for journeys, and ensure their vehicle is winter-ready with the recommended kit. Pedestrians are also warned to take care on icy pavements. With the cold spell set to last through the weekend, the public is advised to stay informed as the situation develops.
