A blue moon is set to grace UK skies on 31 May 2026, marking the first such event since August 2024. Despite its name, a blue moon does not actually appear blue; the term refers to either the second full moon within a single calendar month or the third of four full moons occurring in one season.
What Is a Blue Moon?
According to the Royal Observatory Greenwich, blue moons are relatively rare, taking place only every two to three years. However, in 2018, two blue moons occurred. The upcoming blue moon on 31 May is expected to reach its peak at 9:45am BST.
How to See the Blue Moon
To view the blue moon, look towards the eastern horizon after sunset on 30 May, as the moon will rise in the east. It will be visible throughout the night, setting in the west around sunrise. Clear skies will offer the best viewing conditions.
When Is the Next Blue Moon?
After this event, the next blue moon is scheduled for 20 May 2027. Mark your calendars for another chance to witness this celestial phenomenon.
