Storm Erminio, which continues to lash the Mediterranean region with powerful winds and torrential rain, has blown an extreme plume of dust from northern Africa directly over Cyprus, including areas housing a British military base.
Health Emergency as Air Quality Plummets
Health officials have issued urgent warnings, declaring the air quality severely compromised and dangerous. Measurements indicate particulate density in some locations has soared to thirty-six times the European Union's established safe threshold. Authorities have instructed the public to avoid all outdoor activities and exercise entirely. For those who must venture outside, the directive is to wear protective dust masks or coverings made from wet cloth to mitigate inhalation risks.
A local forecaster described the situation to Philenews as extreme, stating that episodes of this magnitude are typically recorded only once every decade. The unsettling atmospheric conditions, which earlier in the week blanketed Crete in shades of red and orange, have now shifted eastward, casting a thick, hazy carpet over Cyprus.
Travel Chaos and Ground Disruption
The storm's impact has caused significant travel disruption across the region. On Wednesday, several Easter holiday flights destined for Crete were forced to reroute as the dense Saharan dust obliterated visibility. Heraklion's main airport descended into chaos, with grounded departures and disrupted arrivals. At least two flights were compelled to divert after visibility dropped to approximately one thousand metres, a level deemed unsafe for landing procedures.
A British Airways service originating from London was rerouted to Corfu, while a SKY Express flight from Brussels was sent to Athens. On the ground in Crete, dramatic scenes unfolded as a powerful tornado flipped a truck in the coastal area of Pachia Ammos. The violent weather also uprooted trees, damaged agricultural greenhouses, and caused structural collapses, including part of a wall at a ceramics factory.

Storm Erminio's fury extends far beyond the dust cloud, bringing heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds across the wider Mediterranean, prompting red weather warnings. The storm has already claimed at least one life in Greece and caused significant infrastructural damage in Italy.
In Greece, the body of a man in his fifties was recovered in the seaside town of Nea Makri after homes were flooded by heavy rainfall. The fire department reported the man was found trapped under a car, believed to have been swept away by a torrent while attempting to cross a street. The Greek fire brigade received nearly five hundred emergency calls in the greater Athens area alone, including over thirty rescue requests. Authorities issued emergency warnings and closed schools in several regions, including areas east of Athens, the Dodecanese islands, the Cycladic islands, and Crete. On the island of Poros, flooding knocked down a bridge.
In Italy, the storm triggered a massive landslide in the town of Rapolla, forcing the evacuation of three families from an apartment block. Social media footage depicted a jagged cliff edge with thick slabs of concrete perilously overhanging. A separate rockfall in the southern region and a bridge collapse in the eastern town of Montenero di Bisaccia, following severe flooding, have interrupted several roads. Additionally, heavy rainfall triggered a mudslide in the village of Piceno in central Italy, blocking the main road out of the area.
