A dense blanket of fog over Sydney has led to widespread cancellations and delays at one of Australia's busiest airports. On Wednesday morning, the fog descended to about 50 metres above the ground, stretching from the city's southern suburbs to the north-west.
Flight Disruptions
Sydney Airport has been shrouded in fog throughout the morning, causing significant disruptions across the network. Several domestic flights to Melbourne, Canberra, and Port Macquarie were cancelled due to safety concerns. Among the affected services were Qantas flights QF405 and QF425 to Melbourne, QF1427 to Canberra, and QF2160 to Port Macquarie. Jetstar flight 505 to Melbourne and a Qantas service to Christchurch were also grounded.
Incoming Flights Affected
The fog has also impacted flights arriving into Sydney. Two international flights from Canada were diverted to Brisbane Airport, along with three cargo flights. A Sydney Airport spokesperson commented: "Fog has descended at the airport resulting in delays and cancellations across the network. We will continue to monitor the weather conditions as the morning progresses. We advise passengers to check the status of their flight with the airline."
Road Safety Warning
The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) issued a warning at 4am for motorists travelling on Sydney roads. A BoM spokesperson said: "Reduced visibility in fog will make road conditions dangerous during Wednesday in all suburbs. Motorists are advised to take extreme care." Commuters are urged to check the Live Traffic NSW app for updates on road closures and conditions.
