Met Office Issues Yellow Rain Warnings for Scotland Amid Flooding Risk
The Met Office has issued yellow warnings for rain across multiple regions of Scotland, with forecasts predicting heavy rainfall and potential flooding until midnight on Wednesday. These alerts highlight significant weather disruptions expected in both eastern and western parts of the country.
Widespread Rainfall and Flooding Concerns
Forecasters warn that persistent rain, likely to be heavy at times, will continue across eastern Scotland throughout the day. This rainfall follows recent wet weather, increasing the risk of flooding and possible disruption to travel and infrastructure. The Met Office predicts that an additional 15-25mm of rain may fall quite widely, with potential accumulations of 30-40mm over high ground.
Snowfall in Higher Elevations
In addition to rain, snow is expected to fall above 300-400 metres, particularly in areas such as Aberdeenshire, Angus, and Perthshire. Forecasters anticipate that 5-10cm of snow may accumulate by the end of Wednesday, adding to the hazardous conditions in these elevated regions.
Affected Regions and Flood Alerts
The yellow rain warnings cover a broad swath of Scotland. In the east, the alert includes Angus, Dundee, Fife, Perth and Kinross, Stirling, Aberdeen, and Aberdeenshire. In the west, it extends to Argyll and Bute, Inverclyde, North Ayrshire, Renfrewshire, and West Dunbartonshire. Complementing these warnings, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency has issued three flood warnings and seven flood alerts, underscoring the heightened risk of water-related incidents.
Residents and travellers in these areas are advised to stay informed through official updates and take necessary precautions. The combination of heavy rain, potential flooding, and snowfall in higher areas could lead to significant disruptions, including road closures and property damage. Authorities urge vigilance as the weather conditions evolve over the coming hours.
