Storm Dave Intensifies Across Northern UK with Amber Warnings
The Met Office has issued an urgent update, stating that Storm Dave will continue to deepen as it moves north-eastwards across the United Kingdom. This severe weather system is expected to bring heavy snow and gale-force winds to northern regions, accompanied by warnings of potential power cuts and significant disruption.
Amber Wind Warning Issued for Multiple Regions
An amber weather warning for wind has been activated for parts of northern England, Scotland, and Wales, effective from Saturday evening. The Met Office cautions that flying debris could lead to injuries or danger to life, urging residents to take immediate precautions. The warning covers areas including Lancashire, North Yorkshire, Northumberland, north Wales, and Scotland, remaining in place until early Sunday morning.
Record Winds and Heavy Snow Forecast
Gusts of up to 66mph have already been recorded in Capel Curig, north Wales, according to meteorological data. Meanwhile, heavy snow is anticipated, with forecasts predicting up to 30 centimetres over higher ground in Scotland, particularly in the Highlands. Lower areas may see five to 10 centimetres, leading to blizzard conditions and travel disruptions.
Greg Dewhurst, a Met Office meteorologist, explained, "There is cold air across Scotland at the moment and, as the rain pushes across this afternoon, it is going to turn to snow. We'll see heavy snow forming across parts of the Highlands as we go through the rest of the afternoon into the evening time and early hours."
Energy Networks Issue Safety Advice Amid Power Cut Risks
The Energy Networks Association (ENA), representing electricity network operators, has warned of potential power cuts due to the storm's impact on local infrastructure. In a statement, the ENA advised residents to prepare by keeping a torch ready and boiling water stored in a Thermos in case of outages.
Network operators are increasing staffing and moving spare equipment to areas expected to be most affected. The ENA emphasized, "You can call 105 for free in England, Scotland and Wales to report power cuts and receive updates. Remember, during power cuts, modern internet-powered landlines and mobile masts might not work."
Travel Disruptions and Safety Precautions
Travel is expected to be severely impacted, with Network Rail Scotland identifying the worst affected lines on the Ayrshire coast, the East Coast Main Line, and in the north-east. Drivers in warned areas are urged to check journeys before setting off.
Residents are also advised to stay clear of damaged power lines and report them by calling 105 or 999 in emergencies. The ENA added, "Make sure your neighbours are okay, especially if they're elderly or vulnerable."
As Storm Dave intensifies, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, with updates expected throughout the weekend.
