UK Braces for Winter's Return as Met Office Forecasts Snow and Colder Temperatures
UK Braces for Winter's Return with Snow Forecast

The United Kingdom is set for a dramatic shift in weather conditions this week, with the Met Office forecasting a return to colder temperatures and the potential for snowfall in some regions. This comes after a period of unseasonably warm weather that saw parts of the country experience record-breaking highs earlier in March.

From Warmth to Winter Chill

Recent days have brought brighter and warmer conditions to the UK, with Thursday 5 March marking the hottest day of the year so far. Temperatures soared to 19.2°C in Northolt, London, surpassing the previous record of 18.7°C set at Kew Gardens the week before. Notably, this meant that some areas of the UK were even hotter than Barcelona, which recorded highs of only 16°C during the same period.

However, this brief respite from winter is expected to be short-lived. The Met Office has issued a forecast indicating a significant drop in temperatures, with cloudy and rainy weather predicted to dominate across the country in the coming days.

Snow Forecast for Scottish Highlands

According to the latest Met Office update, the week will begin with predominantly cloudy conditions on Tuesday and Wednesday morning. These clouds are expected to clear, allowing for some sunny spells, particularly in the southeast where temperatures could reach around 15°C. In contrast, the northwest will experience cooler weather, with maximum temperatures likely to remain in the high single figures.

The situation is set to change dramatically from Thursday onwards. The Met Office warns that most of the UK will face brisk winds and outbreaks of rain. More significantly, blustery showers are forecast to move into the northwest, bringing with them a chance of snow on the Scottish mountains.

Jason Kelly, chief operational meteorologist for the Met Office, elaborated on the expected conditions: "A notable shift in wind direction to a north-westerly flow will bring a markedly colder day nationwide on Friday, with the potential for a mixture of sunny spells, heavy showers, coastal gales, and snow over high ground."

Detailed Weather Outlook

The Met Office has provided a detailed forecast for the coming days:

  • Today: A rather cloudy day for most, with patchy rain in the west slowly moving east and weakening. Winds will increase through the day, breaking up the cloud to allow some brighter spells this afternoon. Further rain is expected to arrive in the west by evening.
  • Tonight: A band of heavy rain and strong winds will move eastwards overnight. The rain should clear the east by morning, allowing for some clearer spells and a few showers to follow.
  • Wednesday: A drier and brighter day for all with a mix of cloud and sunny spells. Scattered showers are expected in the north and northwest. Winds will gradually ease, and temperatures will be near average.
  • Outlook for Thursday to Saturday: Unsettled and windy conditions are forecast for Thursday, with a band of heavy rain arriving later. Friday will be colder with some blustery showers, occasionally turning wintry, before conditions become drier and less cold on Saturday.

Motorists are advised to prepare for potentially difficult driving conditions, especially in areas where snow may accumulate. The Met Office emphasizes that the exact details of snowfall will become clearer as the week progresses and recommends that the public keep an eye on updated forecasts.
