Met Office Warns of -10C Arctic Blast and Heavy Snow Across UK
UK Braces for -10C Arctic Blast and Heavy Snow

The United Kingdom is shivering under a severe Arctic onslaught, with the Met Office issuing a series of urgent weather warnings for snow and ice that are set to last for days. Forecasters warn that temperatures could plunge to a biting -10°C in parts of Scotland, with the icy grip of the cold snap holding firm across the nation well into next week.

Prolonged Freeze and Widespread Warnings

The new year has begun with a dramatic and dangerous temperature drop, as a surge of cold air from the Arctic engulfs the country. The Met Office has activated multiple warnings, covering all four nations of the UK, with two amber 'act now' alerts in force. These warnings are currently scheduled to remain until midday on Monday, 5 January, but the chilly conditions are forecast to persist for much of the following week.

Many areas will struggle to see temperatures rise above freezing even during daylight hours, creating a prolonged period of hazardous conditions. Rebekah Hicks, Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, stated: "Arctic air and brisk northerly winds are gripping the UK as we start the New Year. Bitterly cold conditions will persist through the weekend and into next week."

Risk of Travel Disruption and Health Alert

The forecast predicts heavy snow showers, particularly targeting northern Scotland and higher ground elsewhere. While some inland areas may see sunshine, the main threat comes from snow settling in northern and central regions over the next 48 hours, coupled with widespread ice. This significantly increases the risk of travel disruption on roads and pavements throughout the weekend and beyond.

In response to the severe conditions, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued amber cold health alerts for England until 6 January. The agency warns that the freezing weather could lead to a spike in weather-related illnesses, placing additional strain on NHS services already under winter pressure.

Dr Agostinho Sousa, Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection at UKHSA, emphasised the human impact: "The forecast temperatures can have a serious impact on the health of some people, leading to increased risk of heart attacks, strokes and chest infections." He urged the public to check on vulnerable friends, family, and neighbours.

Public Urged to Stay Weather Aware

With the mercury predicted to fall to -10°C in Scotland on Monday evening and sub-zero temperatures widespread, authorities are advising caution. The Met Office is urging people to stay weather aware, keep abreast of the latest forecasts, and plan their journeys carefully due to the high likelihood of icy roads and slippery surfaces.

This extended Arctic chill serves as a stark reminder of winter's potency, prompting a nationwide call for vigilance as Britain contends with its first major freeze of 2026.
