Met Office Issues Urgent Ice Warnings as UK Braces for -12C Arctic Blast
Urgent UK ice warnings as temperatures plummet to -12C

The Met Office has issued an urgent warning to the British public as a severe cold snap is set to intensify, bringing treacherous ice and the threat of significant travel disruption.

Dangerous Freeze Sets In

Temperatures are forecast to plunge to a shocking -12C in parts of rural Scotland overnight, with the widespread freeze expected to create hazardous conditions across the nation. The chilling dip is a result of a stubborn Arctic air mass that continues to grip the country, leading to further wintry showers.

Chief Forecaster Steve Willington from the Met Office stated that the cold spell is far from over. "We’re still in the grip of a cold, Arctic air mass today and into Friday, and that means further wintry showers for some, and ice, particularly overnight," he explained.

Travel Disruption Expected

The primary concern for authorities is the formation of ice on untreated surfaces as temperatures fall after dark. This is expected to cause travel disruption tonight and into Friday morning, with drivers being urged to exercise extreme caution.

Willington added a specific warning for motorists and pedestrians: "As temperatures fall overnight, ice will form on untreated surfaces and may cause some travel disruption tonight and into Friday morning."

Nationwide Weather Warnings Active

Multiple official weather warnings for snow and ice are currently in force across the United Kingdom. The Met Office advises the public to stay updated on the latest forecasts and to take necessary precautions for their safety during this period of severe winter weather.
