Parts of the United Kingdom are preparing for significant rainfall and potential flooding after the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for rain. Dozens of flood warnings and alerts have been activated across England and Wales, with widespread heavy showers expected to drench several regions.
Extensive Rainfall Forecast
The yellow warning for rain is in effect until midnight on Monday, covering London, south-east England, south-west England, and parts of Wales. The Met Office has predicted that 10-15mm of rain is likely to fall fairly widely, with some areas exposed to strong south to south-easterly winds potentially receiving 20-30mm. This substantial rainfall could lead to flooding and travel disruptions, particularly during Monday afternoon and evening.
Flood Warnings and Alerts in Place
By 5pm on Sunday, the Environment Agency had issued 96 flood warnings, primarily across the South, South West, East Midlands, and West Midlands of England. Additionally, 218 flood alerts were active, indicating that flooding is possible across much of England. These alerts highlight the heightened risk due to the anticipated heavy rain falling on already saturated ground from recent storms.
Impact on Travel and Conditions
Met Office meteorologist Tom Morgan warned that the heavy rain could cause surface water on roads, leading to difficult driving conditions for Monday evening's rush hour in parts of Wales, central southern England, and the South East. He noted that winds are strengthening, especially in the South West, with rain pushing in from the south-easterly direction onto coasts already affected by recent storms.
Despite the wet conditions, temperatures are expected to reach double figures in parts of the Midlands, eastern England, and the South East, which might feel relatively pleasant for February. However, the combination of rain and wind could exacerbate flooding risks, particularly in vulnerable areas.
Residents in affected regions are advised to stay updated with local forecasts and take necessary precautions to protect property and ensure safety during this period of inclement weather.
