The broadcasting world is mourning the loss of Geoff Fox, a cherished meteorologist who has died at the age of 75 following a nearly decade-long fight with pancreatic cancer.
A Courageous Battle with Illness
Fox passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, as confirmed by his wife, Helaine. His health struggle began in 2016 when he was first diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. After announcing he was cancer-free in 2017, Fox reflected that the harrowing experience had reshaped his perspective, famously stating, "It made me realize how happy I was."
Sadly, the cancer returned this past September. Several months ago, Fox made the difficult decision to stop treatment and began receiving at-home hospice care.
A Distinguished Broadcasting Career
Geoff Fox's career in weather forecasting was both long and illustrious. A New York City native, he started in radio before moving to television in Buffalo, New York.
His most significant tenure began when he joined WTNH in 1984, where he remained a familiar face for 26 years until his departure in 2011. Following a brief period at Fox 61, he and his wife relocated to California. There, he ingeniously built a broadcast studio in his garage, from where he continued his profession.
For the last 10 years, he had been a valued remote team member for News Channel Nebraska, a role he maintained until this past August. Throughout his distinguished career, his talent was recognised with seven Emmy awards.
Remembering a Unique Talent
Michael Shively, Vice President of News and Content at News Channel Nebraska, paid tribute to Fox's unique abilities. "Geoff’s combination of charisma and forecasting knowledge made him a one-of-a-kind TV talent," Shively said.
He added that despite broadcasting remotely, Fox had a profound connection with his audience, being "as much of a Nebraskan as anyone in the state." He will be remembered by colleagues for his endless stories and deep passion for meteorology.
Fox himself was deeply appreciative of his viewers. In a heartfelt Facebook post, he wrote, "I have hugged hundreds, maybe thousands, of viewers... You afforded me an unbelievable life." His wife echoed this sentiment, stating, "He really was grateful for the connection he shared with all of you."
In accordance with his wishes, there will be no large funeral service. Geoff Fox will be cremated with little fanfare, a quiet farewell for a man who brought so much energy and warmth to the screen.
